Tennessee Valley Bicycles

Tennessee Valley Bicycles’ design began as an update to a blighted urban building with street access on two levels, and turned into a major renovation when we discovered a failing concrete beam. We took that opportunity to open a second entrance off the back and create a two-story glass and steel façade looking south to downtown Knoxville.

The design reimagines a failing brick masonry façade on the main entrance, which opens onto the bike shop. The steel structure on the rear shades the glass facade from southern and western sun, provides a second exit from the upper level, and creates a lower entrance for bike rentals and repairs while opening the alley to pedestrian traffic.

The interior design approach uses colors and materials to organize TVB into service areas clear to customers: retail and accessories, service, repair, rentals, and a common gathering space with views of Urban Knoxville and The Smoky Mountains.
